Set in extensive grounds, the property was the home of Norman and Rose from 1912. It was here that Norman created etchings, oils, watercolours, sculptures, the fine ship models which he made as a pastime, and his most famous writing, The Magic Pudding. Over the years Norman transformed his estate, adding classical colonnades and a Roman courtyard to the house, and sculpting nymphs, satyrs and fountains to embellish the grounds. In the Etching Studio, built in 1913, Norman and Rose completed over 11,000 etchings which were sold world-wide. The main Painting Studio was constructed in 1918. The house, studios and grounds are all open to view.

BALLARAT FINE ART GALLERY 40 Lydiard Street North Ballarat VIC 3350 (03) 5320 5858 www.artgalleryofballart.com.au Who Conquers Fear was a gift from Norman to the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 1967. Ballarat Fine Art Gallery is the largest and oldest regional gallery in Australia and houses one of the most comprehensive Australian art collections. This ranges from the early Colonial settlement through to the Gold Rush era to the late 19th Century Heidelberg School, 20th century modernism and Norman was born at "Lisnacrieve", Creswick, a small Victorian town fifteen minutes drive north of Ballarat. Norman's sister Mary, two years older than he, lived at "Lisnacrieve" until she died in 1968. Mary left most of the furniture and pictures to the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery where a replica of the sitting room was built. It contains much of the original furniture including the chaise-lounge and, with a comprehensive collection of works by Percy, Lionel, Norman, Ruby and Daryl Lindsay, is on permanent exhibition. "Lisnacrieve" was furnished in typical Victorian fashion with marble mantlepieces, damask wallpaper, heavy mahogany and rosewood furniture, gilt-edged oleographs, what-nots, family miniatures, shells from Fiji and antimacassars. After Mary's death the rambling wooden house was demolished.

Newson to the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1977. Bendigo Art Gallery is one of Australia’s oldest and largest regional art galleries. The collections of Bendigo Art Gallery include Australian Art from the 1850s to the present day, a special collection of art from the Bendigo goldfields and 19th century European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. Each year Bendigo Art Gallery presents an exciting program of exhibitions and events. This includes guided tours, workshops, talks by arts professionals, films and much more. Bendigo Art Gallery's collection is constantly growing and the Gallery enjoys the support of an enthusiastic Friends of the Bendigo Gallery membership, the City of Greater Bendigo and Arts Victoria.

CASTLEMAINE ART GALLERY AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM 14 Lyttleton Street Castlemaine VIC 3450 (03) 5472 2292 www.castlemainegallery.com The Minuet was a gift from Norman to the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum in 1918. Founded in 1913, the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum has acquired an excellent collection of Australian art works and of historical items from the district's past. The 1931 art deco building designed by Percy Meldrum is noted for its elegant design and is Heritage listed. The building has been extended a number of times. It was further extended and refurbished in 2000 with a Federation Grant of $2M from the Federal Government. The Gallery and Museum is fully accredited by Museums Australia. It is owned by private trustees and managed by a committee elected by subscribers. State and local government support is provided, but the Gallery has a particularly strong tradition of private support from artists and patrons, and its collection has been enriched by such famous personalities as Dame Nellie Melba.

GERALDTON REGIONAL ART GALLERY 24 Chapman Road Geraldton WA 6530 (08) 9964 7170 www.cgg.wa.gov.au The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is the home of the City of Geraldton-Greenough Collection, a collection of 311 artworks, principally paintings and works on paper. The City Collection was initiated in 1949 with a bequest of 40 artworks to the town by Western Australian millionaire, Sir Claude Hotchin. The City Collection continues to grow with a focus on artworks that feature aspects of Geraldton and the Mid-West region or created by local or Western Australian artists. The Wingrove bequest came into the City of Geraldton-Geraldton collection through the widow of Keith Wingrove, a long time friend of Norman Lindsay, who died in 1998. In 1990 the book Norman Lindsay on Art, Life and Literature was edited by Keith Wingrove. Mary Wingrove who owns a Lindsay oil painting of the Batavia, heard an ABC Radio National interview about the history of the Batavia with Geraldton maritime historian Max Cramer. She contacted the Geraldton Regional Library and the then Chief Librarian Pat Gallagher put her in touch with the then Geraldton-Greenough Regional Art Gallery Director, Damian Kelly. On a visit to South Australia in 2000, Kelly met with Mrs Wingrove who gave him sixty-four Lindsay works which her husband had collected. Mary Wingrove died in 2001.

HAMILTON ART GALLERY 107 Brown Street Hamilton VIC 3300 (03) 5573 0460 www.hamiltongallery.org The Olympians was purchased by the E.S. McLeod Bequest for the Hamilton Art Gallery in 1966. Rose posed for every female figure in this major oil painting. Hamilton Art Gallery is one of the finest galleries in Australia and is famous for its outstanding collection of fine and decorative arts. Silver, glass and porcelain, oriental ceramics, tapestries, furniture, paintings and prints are featured in six modern galleries. Many of the treasures are gifts from the gracious country homesteads around Hamilton, the first area of pastoral settlement in Victoria. The Gallery's unique collection offers a stimulating experience for all visitors and is an excellent educational resource for students of art and history. The permanent collection of over 7,000 items is complemented with a program of temporary exhibitions.

MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY Conacher Street Fannie Bay NT 0801 (08) 8999 8264 www.magnt.nt.gov.au The major watercolour Don Juan was purchased by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in 1980. Set in a tropical garden on Darwin Harbour at Bullocky Point is the Northern Territory's premier cultural institution — the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT). The MAGNT collections place the region's art, history and culture, and natural history in an Australian and international context through research, interpretation and collection development. These collections encompass Aboriginal art and material culture, visual arts, craft, Southeast Asian and Oceanic art and material culture, maritime archaeology, Northern Territory history and natural sciences. The MAGNT complex consists of five major permanent galleries, a touring gallery, educational facilities for school groups, a theatre, the Museum Shop and the Cornucopia Museum Cafe. All contribute to providing an entertaining, diverse and educational experience for the local community and visitors to Darwin.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA Parkes Place Parkes ACT 2600 (02) 6240 6411 www.nga.gov.au (Diana the Huntress) was included in the S.H. Ervin Bequest to the National Gallery of Australia in 1968. The collection of Australian art in the National Gallery of Australia incorporates art made in Australia or about Australian subjects since European settlement in 1788, with the greatest strength in the 20th century. Australian art also includes the art of Australia's Indigenous people. This collection is discussed separately under Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. The collection encompasses paintings and sculpture, prints and drawings, photographs, the decorative arts, sketchbooks, posters and installation art. Included are significant works by artists such as Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Frederick McCubbin and Arthur Streeton, members of what has been widely regarded as the national school of Australian painting, the Australian Impressionists.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA The Ian Potter Centre 180 St Kilda Road Federation Square Melbourne VIC 3000 (03) 8620 2222 www.ngv.vic.gov.au Spring's Innocence was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria through the Warren Clark Bequest and the NGV Foundation from Christie's Auctions in 2003. The price paid was $329,000 which is a record price paid for a Norman Lindsay work. Since 1861, the National Gallery of Victoria has been displaying art works for the enjoyment of the community. In the mid-1990s, the gallery acknowledged that its St Kilda Road building could no longer successfully meet the demands of its growing collection and extensive exhibitions schedule. The Victorian State Government agreed to an extensive redevelopment of the site, and also contribute towards the funding of a second NGV building at Federation Square. The Collection is split between The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square, home of Australian art, and NGV International at St Kilda Road, the redeveloped building dedicated to the gallery's magnificent international artworks. Our visitors have two wonderful NGV buildings dedicated to bringing art and people together.

NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL ART MUSEUM Kentucky Street Armidale NSW 2350 (02) 6772 5255 www.neram.com.au Happiness is part of the Howard Hinton Collection and Howard Hinton Bequest given to the New England Regional Art Museum in 1948. The New England Regional Art Museum houses the Howard Hinton collection of Australian art. The collection covers most oeuvres of art in Australia in the period 1880 to 1948, and it is a collection clearly shaped by Hinton's obsession and unbound pleasure in finding, buying, and at regular periods, passing on the treasures. He purchased art from commercial galleries, dealers and often directly from artists whom he grew to know well. He also donated a library of art books. The collection reflects Hinton's early love for Victorian travel paintings as well as his respect for the conventions of Australian landscape art, and it includes works by most of the Australian artists. The collection includes paintings by William Dobell, Adrian Feint, Elioth Gruner, Hans Heysen, J.J. Hilder, Gladys Owen, Margaret Preston, Thea Proctor, Tom Roberts, Ethel Spowers, Arthur Streeton and the Lindsay family.

QUEENSLAND ART GALLERY Stanley Place South Bank, QLD 4101 (07) 3840 7303 www.qag.qld.gov.au Light Lyrics is in the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery and was purchased in 1955. The Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) are located 150 metres from each other, on the south bank of the Brisbane River. Entrance to both buildings is possible from Stanley Place, and the river front entrance to the Queensland Art Gallery is on Melbourne Street. The Galleries are within easy walking distance to the city centre and South Bank Parklands.

TASMANIAN MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY 40 Macquarie Street Hobart TAS 7000 (03) 6211 4177 www.tmag.tas.gov.au Diana Hunting was a gift from Gwladys Morris to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in 1992. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery aims to provide, promote and facilitate interaction with, and understanding of, the cultural and natural world for present and future generations. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery collects, preserves, researches, displays, interprets and safeguards the physical evidence of the natural and cultural heritage of Tasmania, together with relevant material from interstate and overseas. The purpose of this collection is to provide present and future generations with the opportunity to gain information and insight into their world.

TOOWOOMBA REGIONAL ART GALLERY 531 Ruthven Street Toowoomba QLD 4350 (07) 4688 6652 www.toowoombarc.qld.gov.au A Theme from Mozart is part of the Lionel Lindsay Art and Library Collection which is housed at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. Named in honour of Sir Lionel Lindsay, this unique collection was opened by the then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, in 1952. It was originally assembled by Toowoomba resident and friend of Sir Lionel, Mr William Bolton MBE, whose dedication has left the city with a remarkable legacy. The art collection features over 400 art works by members of the Lindsay family and many other significant Australian painters, including Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Rupert Bunny. The Library is of national importance and comprises rare print material including books, manuscripts and maps. The print collection holds records of voyages of discovery in the Pacific, the exploration and early history of Australia, and Australian art, literature and natural history. The manuscripts embellish the print component of the Library. Included are such important documents as letters written by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, navigator La Perouse, and writer Henry Lawson as well as Lionel Lindsay's own papers.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ART COLLECTION Swanston Street (between Faraday and Elgin Streets) Parkville VIC 3052 (03) 8344 5148 www.art-museum.unimelb.edu.au Crete was a gift from Norman to the University of Melbourne Art Collection in 1969. The Ian Potter Museum of Art has gone through a number of name changes and has been housed in different locations on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus. First established as the University Art Gallery in 1975, it was located in the centre of campus in the Old Physics Building. Additional accommodation was found on Swanston Street for it in the Physics Annex in 1988. This space housed both the Ian Potter Gallery and the Art Conservation Centre and together with the University Gallery were known as The University of Melbourne Museum of Art. In 1998 a purpose-built art museum, The Ian Potter Museum of Art, opened to the public and is now considered one of the leading university art museums in the country.

MITCHELL LIBRARY, STATE LIBRARY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Mitchell and Dixson Libraries State Library of New South Wales Macquarie Street Sydney NSW 2000 (02) 9273 1414 www.sl.nsw.gov.au Rita of the Nineties belongs in the Mitchell Library Collection, State Library of New South Wales. The Mitchell Library printed book collection is based on the collection of David Scott Mitchell, Australia's first and greatest collector of Australiana. The Library was opened in 1910 and many thousands of items have been added to the Library since it opened. The collection continues to grow through donations, purchases and deposit provisions whereby a copy of every newly published item in New South Wales should be deposited with the State Library.

NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA Parkes Place Parkes ACT 2600 (02) 6262 1266 www.nla.gov.au This striking oil painting of author and poet Rosemary Dobson belongs in the National Library of Australia Collection. The National Library of Australia is the country's largest reference library. Our role is to ensure that documentary resources of national significance relating to Australia and the Australian people, as well as significant non-Australian library materials, are collected, preserved and made accessible either through the Library itself or through collaborative arrangements with other libraries and information providers. By offering a strong national focus in all that we do and cooperating with others who share our goals, the Library contributes to the continuing vitality of Australia’s culture and heritage.
