Over
a period of eighty years Norman Lindsay painted in oils. Apart from the
classical portraits and single figure nudes painted from life, he garnered
the content of his oils from many sources. These include his own imaginings;
writers and poets whose work he admired; historical events; Greek and
Roman mythology; piracy and the Spanish main and his abhorrence of war.

| Little is known about
Iris other than that she was a Chinese showgirl who posed for Norman during
the 1930s. Norman drew a series of pencil studies of Iris in an elaborate
head-dress and numerous oil paintings for which she posed. |
